Music and Sound

(Created Using Powerpoint)

When it comes to choosing music it is important to have the right sound. It can give the audience the sense of the atmosphere setting and background of the film. Most people believe music expresses both the emotion of a character and words that cant be expressed yet cant be held in. It tells a story of its own and picking the wrong music can change the meaning of the scene/film in general. Music can also heighten drama within a specific scene. But because when choosing our music for our opening it has to be copyright free we can use creative commons as it will make it easier to select for example ;

Grime
Grime originates from London which is one of the reasons why I can use this song in the opening of our opening scene because of our stroy line and the songs lyrics it correlates. Grime is also associated with youths as it was first introduced by artists such as Dizzee Rascal therefore incorporating will show a stereotypical element into our opening scene.

Reggae
our inspiration for our opening scene is 'La Haine'. we saw how well reggae fit with their background in the title credits which we can incorporate. As our opening will be similar in terms of sub genre and narrative it will correlate.  Although with our story line people would think it does not go together however reggae is easy going music almost weightless which will be presented in the opening scene of our film.

Music And Sound

Music and Sound

Music and sound contributes to a film in many ways, it is used for:
  • Dialogue: dialogue is a diegetic sound meaning that its sound that the source of origin is visible on the screen as the action is happening. Unless your doing a film without dialogue, dialogue is used so that the audience can understand what is going on or to tell the story.
  • Background sound: background sound is a non diegetic sound that is added to a film at post production. the use of background sound can alter the mood, and change the pace of the film for example an orchestra can change the pace dramatically if it was an action film.
  • Foley sound: foley sound is also a non-diegetic sound meaning it is reproduction of everyday sound that is also added to a film in post production. The use of foley sound adds emphasis to something for a example someone walking in a scary movie, making the sound of the footsteps louder creates suspense and fright onto the viewer.
For the film opening me and my group are going to use, music and sound will be key to engaging the audience, the type of music we use has to reflect what we're trying to do and to make sure that the right pace, and type of music/sound is used at the same time.  Here are some possible tracks/sounds we can use for our film opening.

Tarrus Riley & Konshens - Good Girl Gone Bad dreadsquad remix

For me and my group's teen opening we decided to do it based on the London Riots that occurred 3 years ago, there was a french film in 1995 that was also based on rioting call La Haine. The opening track for the film is a reggae track showing the rioting. As me an my group is doing our opening inspired by La Haine, I feel that Tarrus Riley & Konshens - Good Girl Gone Bad dreadsquad remix would be a good track for it, as the lyrics relate on what we want to do with our interpretation. It also in a way contrast with the riots but goes with it at the same time because the beat of the track is fairly fast but its at the right tempo to have the audience engaged and keep their attention.

My Big Fat Gypsy Dubstep

This track has the rawness that urban areas in cities like London are stereotyped for. I feel that this track could be used for the opening for our film because it sets the sort of vibes that we're intended to make, even though its a 3 minute opening, it would make it seem that the film is based in the hood and it would be filled with grime hate and anger.

Reggae Love (Vocal Reggae Rap Instrumental) SOLD - Profetesa Beats

This instrumental is also a reggae track that i feel that could work with the opening that we are planning on doing. The beat has a soft tempo to it and will contrast to what we're intending on doing, as the rioting and the anger will be at a fast pace but the reggae make it seem like its a harsh reality of living in a urban place in a city just like La Haine

Music & Sound

Copyright and Copyright Free Music

We were assigned a task to add music to a clip from a teen movie. The clip we got was extracted from Drum line. For this task it was important that we got copyright free music as there are many soundtracks on the internet which are copyrighted and not open for public use. Copyright gives the creator of a film, music or a book the legal rights to control who uses the product and how it is distributed. If a copyrighted soundtrack is used it is breaking the law and we could get sued.

Creative Commons

Creative commons is a website which allows people to expand the range of creative work and to build upon legally and share. By entering a search query such as 'Dance' it searches for that type of music. There are many options within each category to see which ones are copyright and not however creative commons make it easy buy having a download button where the song is copyright free.  When looking for the music we needed to make sure the clip fit with the scenes. For example, it would be easy to just get any dance track and make that our sound however there was more to that as when the beat dropped it needed to be in line with the scene itself and the speed of the soundtrack was also important.

Foley Sound

Within our clip we incorporated foley sound which is a reproduction of everyday sound effects. Our clip consists of many scenes which need foley sounds, since our clip was silent we needed to incorporate foley sounds such as the crowed making noise and drums. The purpose of the foley music is so a film does not sound empty and hollow foley can ale be used to enhance comedy or action scenes. We used a variety of foley such as crickets for the scene outside the campus, another foley sound we used was snoring for the inside of the bedrooms before the last foley, the drums. Each of these sounds make the clip come alive and give it an authentic sound.

The Breakfast Club Remake

The Breakfast Club Remake

Here is our remake of the 1985 teen film The Breakfast Club.
During filming we learned a lot things that will benefit us when we do our own teen film opening for example using the tripod to do every shot, as you watch the remake you'll see how some of the camera shots are shaking this is because we didn't use the tripod. We didn't finish our remake in the time that we was allocated, and had to finish the filming in our own time. From this we learnt that we should manage our timing more effiecently so that we film everything in the same weather conditions if we do it outside.

Media Evaluation

Evaluation Of Media

Review Of Media

Throughout my time in media I have gained knowledge of the film and TV industry. I have also learned the process that a movie goes through, from post production to production, distribution, marketing and then exhibition. This was introduced to us through learning about Thor and In Fear; how two different movies with different budgets come out to the public. One being a big budget Hollywood production and the other being a  small production with a lower beget from an independent distribution company such as Studio Canal. We have also learned about who's involved in making a film and what they contribute. For example, we looked deep into the different roles such as directors, producers, screen-writer's, costume designers etc.

Filming and Editing

In media we filmed various things such as our own swede. I have learned how to set up the camera and use it properly as well as how to use the tripod. Furthermore, I have learned  the use of different camera angles and camera shots such as close ups and long shots. In terms of editing, I have been introduced to cross-cutting, the pace of editing and various other methods of making the editing look continuous and smooth without any jump cuts, leading to the viewers getting bored. The video of the swede I created is below:

Evaluation Of Media

Review Of Media So Far

Since starting media I've learnt a lot of things about TV drama and Flim industry, how it works, the stages that you have to do through when creating a film  or TV drama (Production, Distribution, Marketing and Distribution). Money is vital for TV dramas and film, the more money you have the greater the film will be, i learnt how crucial the budget could be when we done a comparison of a high budget film in Thor 2 and a low budget film in In Fear. Another thing I've learnt is about the pace that production companies have to work out when they have a set date to do a specific job as we have to work at a fast pace to stay on track with what we're doing, for example when we did the remake of The Breakfast Club opening. We have to give ourselves enough time to do the editing etc.

Social networking sites are key for promoting a TV series and film, I've learnt how production companies target specific social networking sites to promote it depending on the target audience for example Thor 2 would have used their own website as well as: Facebook, Twitter, Skype, YouTube, Instagram and many more as they know their intended target audience use it on a regular basis. Whereas In Fear would have used Facebook and YouTube as their budget wouldn't of stretched that far to use more websites.

From studying media i feel that I've a lot about how the TV and Film industry works and how the media influences and contributes to how popular a film can get for example Thor 2 got 8,494,050 pages likes one Facebook on the 22nd of November 2013 and 83,675,801 views on YouTube on the same day. Without the media i feel that we wouldn't see as many films being promoted the way that they are and teenagers wouldn't be as influence to act, dress, do things in a particular way like they see their idols do in teen films.

Evaluation Of Media

Evaluation of media

After looking and reading through my blog I have noticed how I've learned about the film and TV industry. I have learned what makes the film industry work and the step by step process that a movie goes through, from post production to exhibition. This has all happen through learning about Thor and In Fear; these task have helped me realize how different the movies are. One big big budget Hollywood productions from small productions run in a smaller location. I have also gained more of an interest in known who directed a movie and how much work has been put it to make it all happen. This happened when we where learning about the producers that make the film happen, such as big studios such as Universal Studios and small studios such as Studio Canal.
I have also gain more knowledge about the TV industry and how its similar to the Movie industry by doing task such as comparing the different story and camera work from TV and Cinema.

How the media helps Movie and TV.

I have also learned a lot about how social networks such as Facebook and Twitter allow movies and Tv to branch out to their audience. By sharing videos we have created I have also learned that by using YouTube as a viewing platform to present our videos it shows me how easily the video can spread through friends and other people. This helped me understand why movie producers choose to advertise their trailers through YouTube but also through other social networks.
It's easier and a lot more cheaper to advertise then to pay thousands to advertise on TV and Radio. This is a very good way for lower production movies to do this; as it saves a lot of money which they can spend on other production.

Editing

By learning to use different programs to complete our videos it helped my understand how the post production works; Although I imagine it at a much bigger scale. I have become familiar on how to use Final Cut Pro which has inspired me to use to create short movies. Although the editing process takes a while I find it rewarding when placing all the shots together.

After learning to use blogger it has allowed me to understand how to write about movies and also helps me to review movies. Its also an enjoyable way to learn about Media. By working in groups on a blog it has also taught me how people working in Media always work in a big production work to make one final outcome. Therefore by working in a group we can assign each other different posts and we can help each other complete work we might need help on.

Shot by Shot remake: Editing

Editing our shots for our remake

(Rojal editing and putting together the shots)

Here Rojal was using Final Cut Pro to create our shot by shot remake of our Breakfast Club intro.
There was some difficulties such as the original video being longer then our remake. Therefore the voice over was longer then the shots being shown. So we decided to make some shots extended by slowing down the motion. We did this by extending the time the shot is shown. We used the same time that each shot was shown on the original intro to Breakfast Club.
By doing this it made our remake even more similar to the original.

(Watching the video over)

We all watched how the editing was coming along and gave our opinion on how to improve it.
Therefore Rojal could understand how to make our remake better. We decided to use the original soundtrack to the original Breakfast Club and add it to the start of our remake too.
This made our remake more similar too.
We then all decided that we should include the credits at the beginning of the remake as they do on the original movie. By using text to make the credit this proved to be very time consuming, so we told Rojal not to include every single credit because it wasn't that important.

(Using the 'slow motion' tool to extend our shots)

A progress video of our remake so far whilst editing.

Shot by Shot remake: Filming

Collecting our shots for the intro to The Breakfast Club
(The Director telling them how to act in the scene)

We all assigned ourselves different roles to complete the task easier and better. Cristian worked as the director making sure that the camera was in the right position and trying to capture the shot
and make it look as close as possible to the original Breakfast Club.
Rojal helped film shots and picked out the locations that could help us achieve similarity to the movie.
This was helpful as it allowed me to position the camera in the right place quickly.
Ashley carried around the shots from the original movie and told us the order of each shot. We decided to keep the shots in order as much as possible as it was easier to cross off which shots we have done.
This also allowed the group to work swiftly.
Ismail assisted the group by telling us we could improve the shots. He also gave advise to Ashley on which location was better to shoot to make our film look even more familiar to the original.

(Cristian and Rojal setting up the camera)

(Lockers in The Breakfast Club opening scene)

Tilting the camera

Here Rojal is setting up the camera to achieve a shot that is most similar to the original scene. In the picture we are filming some locker that have been placed for us. Rojal mentioned that the shot is actually a tilt show and isn't still. Therefore we placed the camera on the tripod and Rojal tilted the camera whilst filming. This allowed the shot to look even more similar to the original movie.

Working together

In this picture Ismail is showing the original order of the shots to Rojal. This helps him by allowing him to understand which shot he is filming now and which one he will be doing next; and most importantly if it is in order. By helping each other it allowed us all to finish our shots quicker and in the right order.

In the car
Here we decided to include Ismail as the little girl that says "yeah!" in the Brains car. We decided to film them all bunched up as this shows they are a family, Ashley played the mum and Rojal the Brain. Cristian also took a combination of mid shots, close ups, extreme close ups and over the shoulder to show their conversation.

Problem Solving

Here we were filming the shot where the basket case exits the car and the criminal walks in front of the car, since we didn't have an actual sized car we decided to use a toy prop car. We had trouble think of how to make it look like an actual size. Until we decided to place the car close to the camera to make it look bigger. We then used Ismail as the criminal to walk up to the camera. Thereby gradually pushing the car forward to make it look like its moving. This was the easiest way to make this scene possible.

Avoiding Problems

On the other hand we decided not to include the basket case exiting the car as this was hard to do; it also looked very odd when filming. Since we didn't have enough time to travel outside and film the shot, we attempted to use a chair as the moving car and a blank paper as the window. However after seeing the shot and not being happy with the outcome we decided it would be better to leave the shot and not include it.

Here we we're testing how the positioning of the car would appear on the camera.

Characters & Roles

Each person within the group will be assigned a role to play...

Ashley plays Claire who is the 'Prom Queen' and a bit of a snob. She is portrayed as a spoilt rich daddy's girl who believes she doesn't belong in detention she will be serving. As our group is a group of 4 and there is only one girl, Ashley will also play the mother of Brian while Ismail plays the sister and Alison the 'Basket Case'.

Ismail: Since Ashley was the only girl and was in Brian's scene Ismail had to be the sister. He will have to try his best to do a girls voice however will not be hard due to him only saying one word 'Yeaah'. Ismail will also play the father of Claire within the scene, Andrew the boy classified as a jock and the rebel John Bender.

Rojal plays Brian who is sort of a nerd. His the genius out of the family but when it comes to socializing his isolated. Rojal will also be playing Andrews father who is passionate about his sons sports career.

Cristian has not got a role however is behind the camera making sure all the camera work corresponds to our plan and refers to the shots used in 'The Breakfast Club'. Although Cristian was also the overhead at the beginning explaining how people see 'The Breakfast Club Characters'.

Scipt

This is the script we will be basing our remake of 'The Breakfast Club' on.
This script is from http://www.dailyscript.com/scripts/breakfast_club.html

The Breakfast Club

                    written and directed by
                         John Hughes

1. EXT. SHERMER HIGH SCHOOL - DAY

During Brian's monologue, we see various views of things
inside the school including Bender's locker.

                          BRIAN (VO)
               Saturday...March 24, 1984. Shermer
               High School, Shermer, Illinois.
               60062. Dear Mr. Vernon...we accept
the fact that we had to sacrifice a
               whole Saturday in detention for
whatever it was that we did wrong,
what we did was wrong. But we think
you're crazy to make us write this
essay telling you who we think we
are, what do you care? You see us
as you want to see us...in the
               simplest terms and the most
               convenient definitions. You see us
as a brain, an athelete, a basket
case, a princess and a criminal.
Correct? That's the way we saw each
other at seven o'clock this morning.
               We were brainwashed...
                                                  CUT TO:

2. INT. CLAIRE'S CAR - DAY

We see CLAIRE and her FATHER sitting in their car in the
     parking lot.

Claire is the prom queen and is clearly a snob.

                            CLAIRE
               I can't believe you can't get me
out of this...I mean it's so absurd
I have to be here on a Saturday!
               It's not like I'm a defective or
               anything...

                       CLAIRE'S FATHER
I'll make it up to you...Honey,
               ditching class to go shopping
doesn't make you a defective. Have
               a good day.

Claire rolls her eyes and gets out of the car and walks
     up the school front steps
                                                  CUT TO:

3. INT. BRIAN'S CAR - DAY

We are in BRIAN's car. His MOTHER is there and so is
his little SISTER. He is sort of a nerd.

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
Is this the first time or the last
               time we do this?

                            BRIAN
                    (upset)
               Last...

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
Well get in there and use the time
               to your advantage...

                            BRIAN
Mom, we're not supposed to study; we
just have to sit there and do
               nothing.

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
Well mister you figure out a way to
               study.

                    BRIAN'S LITTLE SISTER
                    (annoyingly)
               Yeah!

                        BRIAN'S MOTHER
               Well go!

Brian gets out of the car and walks towards the school.
                                                  CUT TO:

4. INT. ANDREW'S CAR - DAY

     We see ANDREW and his FATHER.  Andrew is clearly a jock;
he’s wearing a letterman’s jacket with lots of patches on it.

                       ANDREW'S FATHER
               Hey, I screwed around...guys screw
               around, there's nothing wrong with
that. Except you got caught, Sport.

                            ANDREW
Yeah, Mom already reemed me, alright?

                       ANDREW'S FATHER
                    (angry)
You wanna miss a match? You wanna
blow your ride? Now no school's
gonna give a scholarship to a
               discipline case.

Andrew gets out of the car and walks into the school.
                                                  CUT TO:

5. EXT. SHERMER PARKING LOT - DAY

We see JOHN BENDER walking towards us. He is wearing
sunglasses. A car is coming towards him but he doesn't
     stop walking.

The car slams on its breaks directly in front of him.

Bender gets out of the frame. Out of the car steps
ALLISON. She is dressed all in black. She steps
forward to look in the car's front window and the car
     drives away.

Shot By Shot Remake: Planning

Planning the Remake

For the planning stage for the remake of the opening we had to watch the clip to see what the characters was wearing, how they act, the different camera angels etc so that we can do a similar version of it with the resources that we have. Each of the characters have different styles for example the Basketcase and the Princess. As we're not old enough to have cars we've decided to use toy cars instead and film it in a way that makes the car bigger than it actually is. We decided to film in Owen fields, entrance of the college and the inside of the college as it has similar things to want is shown in the opening of the film.

Travelling And Arriving In The Breakfast Club

Travelling And Arriving In The Breakfast Club

The Breakfast Club uses different modes of transport to represent different characters. Examples are below:

The Athlete
This character is driven in a truck and the truck suggests
masculinity which fits perfectly with his athletic stereotype. Aside from the truck, his clothing also suggests that he is an athletic person.

The Princess
She is driven in a luxury BMW. Not only does this suggest she's rich but it also implies she may be popular. Due to her parents spoiling her, she has an attitude where she feels as if she should be respected by everyone, which is why she is considered the princess.

The Brain
He is driven in a cheaper family vehicle with his sibling in the car. This suggests that it is a family vehicle and his family is close. His license plate is EMC2 which is a scientific equation, which just proves he is the brain.

The Basketcase
This girl is taken in an ordinary car but unlike the others she doesn't receive a good bye message, she just exits and the parents drive off. This mirrors how lonely she is and could be due to the fact that people consider her as 'weird'.

The Criminal
He is walking, whereas the other characters were driven. This raises suspicion as to not only why his parents aren't dropping him off but why he's alone. This sense of suspicion and unanswered questions is just part of the reason as to why he is the shady criminal character, walking without awareness of his surroundings, almost getting hit by the car.

Travelling And Arriving - The Breakfast Club

Travelling and arriving is an important element within teen films. Not only does it show us the location but also its the first time we see the characters. We recognize their personalities and their roles within the movie. Each person from 'The breakfast Club' enter differently and all have different personalities which show through their arrival for example 'The Princess' arrives in a BMW which suggests wealth.

Transport For Teen Openings

Transport for teen openings

The type of transport a character of a teen film arrives in set the personality that the have, for example if they arrive in a fancy sports car, we as the audience assume that they are rich and athletic. If he or she arrives on a skateboard we automatically know that they are a skater boy or girl. The better the transport the better (sometimes worst) the person's status maybe within the film. There are several types of transports my group and i can use to introduce the characters.

The Underground/trains

Using the train or underground suggest how the person lives far away from the high school/college. They're usually by themselves suggesting this character is lonely, doesn't really have friends or they deliberately separate themselves from others. My group and i could in cooperate this method of transport in our teen film opening to set up a contrasting of two different characters that becomes friends.

The Bus

Using the bus to introduce the character of the film suggests the character is an ordinary person who is calm cool and collected. By introducing the character arriving to high school/college it shows how he or she is an ordinary teenager who wants to get by. I could use the character arriving into the film via bus make him or her like-able, it shows the simplicity of their personality.

Car

When a teenager arrives in a car it can suggest several things depending on the style of the car for example if they arrive in a beaten up car. A beaten up car suggest how the character is from a really tough background which makes them have a low self esteem. Another example is the character arriving in a BMW or a fancy sports car, by them arriving in such a prestige car like this, this suggests how the child is posh, stuck up and we get a sense that they're popular with the peers. My group and i could in cooperate for our opening for our teen film to create a sense of hate towards the person who comes in a fancy car or make the person who comes in a rusty car gain sympathy from the audience.

Walking

Introducing a character via walking suggests that they're an average kid who fit and healthy or they care about the environment. In contrast it can suggest that they don't get enough love from their parents as they don't want to drive them to school. In the Breakfast Club the Criminal is shown to walk to school on a saturday morning suggesting he is used to making this journey to school on a saturday or his parents are tired of driving him to school. My group and i could have one of the characters introduced into the opening walking to show a sense of contrast with the other character as they others may come in a car, bus etc and that person is walking, so it shows the reality of teenagers funding.

Transport For Teen Openings

Ways of Travelling in Teen Movies

British based teen movies wouldn't include teens in cars compared to an american teen film. If the teens where still in high school/College we would see them arriving in different types of transportation such as Bus or Tube. This has a huge difference compared to American teen movies as american teens would be driving from the age of 16, however British teens do not drive at this age. In some ways the form of transport they pick will also depict their character. For example:

Walking
A teenager that walks to school alone tells the
audience that he/she is a 'Loner' or possibly isn't every popular at school, The fact he/she isn't on the bus could also mean that they cannot afford the bus fair or any other form of transportation.
However if there is a group of teens walking this could mean they are the popular kids or friends.

Bus
Teens who travel by bus will probably be an average teenager. They usually get the bus with their friends.
This also means that the teenager can afford the bus fair which could suggest their parents are middle class, for example the teen that walks doesn't get the bus because they cannot afford it, however this teen does.

Tube
A teenager who gets the tube means that they live far away from their school, This could suggest that the teen lives in the suburbs, an area that is better then the city, Therefore they choose to travel by tube. This doesn't necessarily suggest anything about the teenagers status in school.

Skateboard
A teenager who skateboards to school can suggest that they like to be alone, or it could also mean that they are seen as the 'cool kid' either way by using a skateboard this part of their image. The skateboarder is usually stereotyped as not being a very good student. But sometimes they are actually a very good student.
