Teen Movies
Teen Movies have developed throughout the years into a favourite genre for many people.
These movies have created stereotypes in teens such as smart girls, dumb jock, and the everyday school nerd. However teen movies also include sub-genres such as horror, comedy and musicals. The teen movie culture has expanded its market by mixing these genres to create new film.
There is a variation of teen movies that appeal to boys; such as sport films, and teen movies that appeal to girls; such as romance.
Horror: Jeepers Creepers
Jeepers Creepers is a teen horror movie that introduces the fright night style to Teen Movies.
This genre has expended with movies like Nightmare on Elms Street, Friday the 13th and Halloween. Teenagers enjoy being scared therefore some of the most well known horror movies are targeted to teenagers. In most of these movies there is the typical group of teens that get lost or some how end up in trouble. Directors explore this factor as a way to develop their story/movie. For example in Jeepers Creepers the protagonists run into trouble because of their curiosity.
Justin Long is a very well known actor for his roles in Teen Movies. He has played the role of student in the majority of his movies. Including Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story; this movie also included the genre of sport. Therefore it appeals to most teenage boys. Justin Long's contribution to teen movies has allowed his to be open to most teen movies. He is used because he plays the protagonist in most movies; he has created a likeable persona about him therefore teenagers are likely to enjoy movies that he stars in.
Although this isn't a movie that was shown in cinemas Highschool Musical developed from a tv movie to a cinema movie. Highschool Musical appeals to teenagers who enjoy singing. The movie mostly targets teen girls who like to watch romantic films with boys. However the movie is also appealing to boys as it has a theme of sports. This is usually a factor that directors use to appeal to teenage boys.
Highschool Musical uses young actors for teens to relate to each character in the movie.
This is a completely different sub-genre to horror because it appeals to a completely different teenage audience.
Action: Kick-Ass
This type of movie appeals to older teenagers that enjoy bloody and action packed storylines. The characters in the movies are also stereotyped teenagers. For example the hero of the movie dreams of becoming a superhero. This is similar to many teens when they were younger. The movie is also target to teenagers that enjoy superhero movies like Marvel and Batman as it includes the themes of people dressing up and fighting crime.
